Hi [NAME fallback=there],
Nic says the trails are riding beautifully at the moment. The crew have done a great job getting everything back to the correct standard and the results are now there to see. Riders are telling us that Maroon is riding the best they have ever seen so give it a blast this weekend. It is a great mix of technical and open riding and highly recommended.
Let us know what you think about the state of the trails. The crew are so keen to do a great job and are putting their hearts into the work. The trail crew is made up of Joshua who is acting trailmaster at the moment - just 18 years old but keen as mustard and loving his work, Zwane who used to work as a cane cutter, has been around the longest and is now a seasoned trail hand and Siya who has only been around for 2 months but has made his presence felt with his motivation. Zwane and Siya are handling the maintenance and are currently building the yellow route all on their own. They cannot wait to let you guys loose and hear what you think about it.
While we are looking for a new trailmaster, we can really do with the feedback from all our riders so tell them how you are finding things and what you think they can do better. A comments book will be left at the permit sales desk for that purpose so please let us know your views. We do weekly draws at club night for a complimentary sports massage from Vanessa De Beer of Ballito Sports Massage (the best in the business) and once a month we will put the names of all the people writing comments in a hat and one of you will win the prize so get commenting. (Alternatively you can email trailmaster@hollatrails.co.za if that is easier)
I have had a few enquiries as to the operating times and how the gate situation works. I think it is important to have the times always available because they will change in Winter, so I have put a shortcut in the list on the right hand column.
Basically what has happened is that we have done away with the keypad system, the keypads that are there are for the sole use of the private residents on the property. If you are a member, you can gain access 24/7 with a disc which can be got from Heather for the fully refundable amount of 50 South African Rands. For the non-members it is simple, if the gate is open, then Holla is open and if it closed then Holla is closed. I have included the times below for this issue but they will be under the shortcut in future.
For Permit Sales: Tuesday to Friday from 06h00 to 16h30 Saturday from 05h30 to 13h00 Sunday from 05h30 to 15h00
On the subject of times, we have our first Wedding at Holla this Saturday so the veranda will be closed from 11h00 but you can still use the benches in the garden until 13h00.
Have a good one, Wayne

The Holla Riding Club is officially open for all to join as an annual member. This is your annual CSA license fee that you pay in order to race in any of the annual MTB events around the country. In order to obtain this you need to belong to a club and pay the once off fee of R70 or R300 for elite riders, otherwise you need to pay R35 every time you enter a race. Please follow the below process: 1. Go onto www.myrace.co.za and first register as a user. You will then need to enter an access code which will sign you in as a user. (remember to keep your username and password somewhere safe) 2. Once signed in you can apply for your License by choosing which license you want, which province and then choose Holla Riding Club as your affiliated club. If you have any problems please e-mail Bianca at ppc.kzn@gmail.com 3. Once you have done this please e-mail Gill, the Holla Chairlady at gill@sugarrush.co.za so she can go on and approve your membership. 4. If you wish to upgrade to an Elite membership at an additional cost of R300 per annum please let Gill know and she can send you the relevant forms to you for completion. This will entitle you to discounts on Holla kit and plenty more.
The HOLLA Running club is up and running - we are a registered club with KZNA and we have official 2010 numbers so you can enter official races now including your comrades qualifier. Our FIRST two running members put a stellar performance in the Tongaat Panthers 16km this past weekend.
To register as a Holla Trails runner, email Lou on email: holla@hollatrails.co.za or even better, find Josh at the permit sales desk, fill out your application form right then and there, pay your ASA R80 licence fee and leave with your official race numbers. Easy Peasy!
INITIAL PRE-HOSPITAL MANAGEMENT OF SNAKE BITE
1. Before leaving, check that the emergency telephone number is stored in your phone 2. In the case of a snake bite, immobilize the patient and keep them calm and call the emergency number immediately, do not delay. If alone, keep calm and do not continue cycling, sit down alert a fellow rider and ask them to phone the emergency number and ask them not to leave you until help arrives. The person phoning may have to ride to a higher point for cell phone signal. If you have a GPS unit get a GPS co-ordinate of the snake bite victim to aid with recovery 3. Lie down, keep calm and keep hydrated 4. Do not suck the bite site - Do not apply a tourniquet 5. Comforting and reassuring the patient is a very important part of the first aid treatment. 6. Try to get a good description of the snake 7. Paramedics will have the necessary equipment to treat snake bites and will transfer the patient to Alberlito Hospital in Ballito
Notes: In most cases, victims have a couple of hours before serious life-threatening symptoms manifest themselves. ONLY in suspected neurotoxic bites (mamba, Cape cobra), it is recommended that you apply a wide crepe bandage (or other material) firmly above the bite site (as tightly as for a sprained ankle) to slow the spread of venom to vital organs like the heart and lungs. The life threatening neurotoxic effects of Mamba and Cape Cobra bites (such as difficulty in breathing) develop within 30 min to 4 hours. If you are more than 2 hrs away from medical assistance, respiratory support (e.g. mouth-to-mouth resuscitation) may be necessary. The life threatening effects of a cytotoxic snake bite (e.g. puff adder) develop late (6-24 hours). Wait for medical assistance to arrive.
